Need for collaborative effort against the massacre mission of the Fulani herdsmen
I must begin by condemning the slaughtering of Benue people by Fulani herdsmen. Even if the Fulani herdsmen have been offended by the Agatu people, do they (Fulani herdsmen) suppose to take law into their hands and embark on mass killing in Agatu? If everybody begins to take law into his or her hand when being offended, can there be peace, unity and progress in this country? Even though the country is not experiencing the expected peace but the fact still remained that there is peace in this country when one look at what is happening in other countries like Libya, Sudan, Syria, Palestinian and so on. Notwithstanding, there is a need to do more in enhancing and ensuring more peace, unity and progress of our Nigeria.
However, the first time Fulani herdsmen invaded Benue State and bloodbath (massacred) thousands of Tiv people, the Idomas and Igbos in the state were happy. According to the Idomas, Tiv people have marginalized them, thereby taking all the vital positions, both at the state and federal levels for themselves. For Idomas, Fulani herdsmen were doing the right thing by helping them to reduce the population of the Tivs so that they shall one day marginalized the Tivs or be going head to head with them. Nevertheless, the Igbo people who are doing business in the state were also happy due to the fact that during the Biafra’s war in the country, the Tivs refused to join forces with them against the Nigerian army, which the Igbos regarded them as Fulanis/Hausas that owed Nigeria and what things to be done only in their own way. According to the Igbos, the Fulanis that Tiv people joined forces with them to kill them Igbos are now killing the Tivs and it was something of joy for them.
I have engaged in a serious debate with some Igbos and the Idomas, who were happy about the killings of the Tivs by the Fulani herdsmen. I tried to educate them by changing their mentality but all my efforts prove abortive. I wrote an article, condemned the happy mood and the derision (mockery) of the Igbos and the Idomas over the killings of the Tivs by the Fulani herdsmen and it was published in Daily Independent Newspaper.
However, the Fulani herdsmen are now killing the Idomas in the state more than the Tivs and the same Fulani herdsmen have invaded some states in Igbos speaking areas of the country and sexually harassed the women. Their activities were reported in most of the national dailies. The Idomas and the Igbos, who were jubilating over the massacre of the Tivs by the Fulani herdsmen, are now the victims of Fulani’s massacre.
I must state here clear as I have being always emphasizing that Fulani herdsmen are after everybody, either Igbo, Yoruba, Tiv, Idoma, Igede and so on. If you are not with them (Fulanis), you are their enemy and they cannot spared you when they come for the attack. Only the Fulani herdsmen know what they are after, it is now obvious that their reason for massacring people anywhere they go is beyond just seeking for the grazing area for their caws.
There is need for the collective effort to fight against the ungodly mission of the Fulani herdsmen, thereby preventing them from killing more which may lead to the annihilation of all other ethnic groups in the country, leaving only Fulanis.
